Making SENCO consultations actionable
How to turn a brief conversation about a pupil into one clear classroom test, shared responsibility and a useful review.

A hurried consultation can end with a long list of possibilities and no clear test in the classroom. The goal is not for the SENCO to solve a pupil in ten minutes. It is to help colleagues frame the concern, connect it to context and agree the next useful action.
Bring a pattern, leave with a test
- Describe one context where participation is difficult and one where it is easier.
- Bring pupil and family views that are already available.
- Name what has been tried and how consistently it was available.
- Choose one change that can be observed in normal practice.
- Agree who will do it, for how long and what will inform review.
- Record what would trigger earlier follow-up or safeguarding action.
The resulting action might be modest: a visible first step, a different check for understanding, a planned transition or a quieter route to ask for help. A specific, consistently tested adjustment produces more useful information than several changes introduced at once. The next consultation can then build on evidence rather than restart the same conversation.
