Before the lesson: anticipate without lowering ambition
- Name the essential learning, vocabulary and likely misconception.
- Break the explanation or model into a small number of visible steps.
- Choose an example and non-example that reveal the important distinction.
- Plan one temporary visual, verbal or written scaffold for the likely barrier.
- Decide how every pupil can respond so understanding becomes visible.
During the lesson: check, then adapt
- Check understanding before independent work rather than relying on confidence or compliance.
- Re-model or reduce the step size when the barrier is in understanding.
- Change the route to the learning goal, not the goal itself, unless curriculum assessment shows this is necessary.
- Use flexible grouping for a defined purpose and review it frequently.
- Notice whether the scaffold is enabling thinking or merely completing the task for the pupil.
